Meet Mariel

This blog is a small representation of my most current sessions, my clients love stories and all the adventures I am privilaged to go on! Ways to my heart include coffee, feeding me before I am "hangry" and anything shabby chic/rustic. My vintage camera collection grows everday and I am usually smiling and quoting random movies. Most importantly Mariel O. Photo celebrates love in all forms regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation & gender identity.

The dates of late August to November are considered photographer's "busy" season; people have weddings, engagement sessions, mini theme sessions and of course Christmas photos. My first session of the season was a combo of engagement & family with Sara, Steve and Dallas.

Alyssa and Sean were an adorable couple whose wedding I can't wait to photograph next October. They are big into the craft beer scene and brought along their favorite beverage to celebrate the session. I always encourage my couples to bring along something personal to add to their session. They love the craft scene so much that they will be married at the rad The Hops Company in Derby which is gonna be new!

This wedding from a couple of months ago was one for the books for many reasons. My college roommate found a amazing man to marry and we got to celebrate it all week long in a simply beautiful location, St. Lucia!Matt and Cory really compliment each other (they BOTH hate tomatoes? so odd to me) and he fits so well into our group that we are all family. All week long there were countless adventures to go on: boat excursion to the Grand Pitons, volcano mud baths, jet skis, paddle-boarding and getting a tan. The drinks flowed as freely as smiles & laughter and it was pure joy!

Heather and Chris have been together 14 years and have waited a long time to make it "official." The bride got in touch with me last year for an fall wedding but decided spring is just as perfect. This couple from Ohio really welcomed me into their lives and it was a pleasure to capture. The intimacy of less than 10 people really made it all about their love and family. Nothing else is needed.

Weddings are a celebration of not only the couple but for family. I see a lot of love in the details. Kari & Aaron has a lot of moments that expressed who they were separately and as a couple. From the winter wonderland horse carriage ride, to the woodland cake, and even their fathers dancing together to The Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be" ( you know: 'But I would walk 500 miles.....') the day was full of fun and love.

Some couples find love at work and some through friends, but in the new millennium connecting online is becoming more typical & this was the case for Michael & Yayee. They opted for a small intimate Sunday wedding with close friends and family. The day before snow fell finally making it feel like a true Connecticut winter.

The end of year means taking a look back on all the images that I was lucky to photograph. I managed to get behind the camera a lot with second shooting and even assisting/3rd shooting. Each image takes me back to all the new couples I've met and weddings I experienced. Each one unique and fun! 2016 brought my goal of doing my first solo wedding // read about it here. The sky is the limit for next year and I can't wait to see what it brings with more love to witness and more doing what I love. Here are some of my favorite images of 2016...

There are so many details of your wedding day that your photographer tries to catch. What I find most essential is having a second photographer or assistant. They are the lead photographer's best friend. There's so much to see, so much to photograph its so great to have someone by your side. I have second shot over 10 weddings so far and its really made me refine my eye and style. Each person that I've assisted has a different vibe which is as unique as the couples they serve.

Personal post alert! My best friend since 8th grade got married at the most beautiful place to the best match for her. I was honored to take their engagement photos on the beach last December // here. I got to witness their love and laughter then and it made this day even more special. The seaport has so much meaning to Heather's family and everywhere I turned was historic and there were many options to be inspired.

I had the pleasure of capturing a relaxed and rustic farm wedding as my very first go around as a wedding pro. Aspen and Mike were honestly a dream to work with as my first clients. The family and friends that surrounded them were amazing and made me feel incredibly welcomed. I got to visit a private farm home in my husband's hometown of East Haddam. This couple got married in a hay field and its hard to pick a favorite part because this hit all my wedding bucket list...boots & lace, burlap, DIY details and a beautiful ceremony. Thanks so much you two!
